SEVENTEEN

Samantha shivered and tore her eyes away from Dax’s blog for a moment. Maybe just a tank top after the bath was a bad idea—she was no longer warm and cozy. She looked around, hoping she’d left a sweatshirt or something by the desk, instead of in her dresser or directly into the washing machine. Nope. She was definitely a creature of routine.

A check of her screen showed her the dark fading just slightly—dawn was coming. Dax hadn’t moved, though. Surely she could read the rest before he “woke,” even if she spared the minute to get something warmer.

The kitchen was closer than the bedroom, and the oversized flannel shirt she pulled out of the washing machine wasn’t that dirty. It passed the smell test, anyway, and bonus: the sleeves were still rolled up to the wrists. She shrugged into it and curled back up in the desk chair, sitting cross-legged to warm her toes under her legs.

Had Dax met his father? Was there anything about her in the blog? Samantha found her place on the screen and began to read, half-hoping that she would see herself in his words.
